The Ghana FA have confirmed FIFA have accepted their request to pay tribute to ex-international Yakubu Abubakari during Sunday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Egypt.
The former Ajax Amsterdam midfielder who played for the Black Stars during the 2006 AFCON passed away in Tema – a suburb of Accra, last month.
Ghana FA bigwigs requested from FIFA to honour the midfielder who died aged 36 when the West Africans face Egypt in Cape Coast on Sunday.
FA Communications Director Ibrahim Sannie Daara has confirmed FIFA has given them the greenlight to go ahead with plans to honour the former Eredivisie winner during the game.
“FIFA have given us the go ahead to honour Zapata (Yakubu Abubakari) during the game. We wrote to FIFA to seek clearance and they have granted us so we will honour him during the game,” he told Accra-based Happy FM.
Ghana have aimed to beat Egypt who are without star-man Mohamed Salah and a couple of star-names for the clash against the Black Stars in a lowly fancied game.
