Referee Juliet Appiah became the first female referee to officiate in this season’s Ghana Premier League.
The referee’s appointment committee selected Juliet Appiah to handle the match-day 11 game between Dreams FC and Inter Allies in Dawu.
Having started off on a good note, referee Juliet Appiah became the center of controversy midway in the game when she took some strange decisions.
Appiah in the first half denied Inter Allies what looked like a penalty after Dreams FC defender Massaudu Abdulai fouled Inter Allies winger George Amanoo, however the referee awarded a free kick on the edge of the box which was beautifully executed by Inter Allies leading goal scorer Victorien Adebayor.
The match official however got Inter Allies Coach Kenichi Yatshuhashi frustrated on the touchline due to some weird decisions which kept the Japanese complaining to the fourth official and the match commissioner.
Referee Juliet Appiah again awarded a free kick on the edge of the box to Dreams FC following a handball on the part of Inter Allies midfielder Samuel Bekoe having giving a blind eye on an initial handball by Dreams FC skipper Leonard Owusu who first handled the ball before it struck the arms of Bekoe. Owusu expertly converted the free kick to draw his side even.
She further marred her performance on the day after awarding a dubious penalty to Dreams FC late in the game when she penalized Inter Allies defender Maxwell Ansah after the ball came off the chin of the defender which saw the referee shockingly pointing to the spot.
Leonard Owusu made no mistake as he converted to snatch all points for Dreams FC.
Fans of Inter Allies after the game expressed their displeasure about the performance of the referee.
“It is very sad for a female referee to do this, this are the kind of things they do which always see them being assaulted,” a fan told Ghanasportsonline.com after the game.
Another fan also said “I am coming all the way from Koforidua, her decisions was shocking and it is clear as you can see the players and officials of Dreams FC are not even happy with this victory. I would like the referees appointment committee to watch this game very well, her performance was really bad.”
A rather devastated and angry female supporter of Inter Allies said “I am a female and i become very sad when my fellow females behave this way, this is clear robbery if you ask me, our players did very well to get two clean goals and the referee awarded that dubious free kick and penalty to them, is very sad.”
