Ghana’s Janet Amponsah has won the country’s first medal at this year’s Africa senior Athletics Championship in Asaba (Nigeria).
The former National record holder clinched silver in the women’s 100m final after clocking a time of 11.54sec to finish behind Ivorian and Africa’s best Josee Marie Ta Lou who made a time of 11.15sec.
Amponsah bettered her time of 11.68sec in the semifinal.
The Ghanaian fend off an injury scare just before the race after colliding with a cameraman during the warm-ups.
The 25-year-old insisted on participating in the finals despite advice to pull out in order to receive medical attention for a cut on her chest.
She however rose to the occasion by finishing just behind the favorite Josee Marie Ta Lou who doubles as the World silver medal holder.
The Kumasi-born thus wins her first medal at the competition having missed out on medals at the 2012, 2014 and 2016 editions.
Young prospect Hor Halutie however missed out narrowly in the medal zone after placing fourth, making a time of 11.64sec.
