A masterful late show from Ghana striker Jordan Ayew secured progress for Crystal Palace in the English FA Cup as he climbed off the bench to combine with Jeffrey Schlupp to score the match-winner in a 1-0 win over Grimsby on Saturday night.
The 27-year-old was introduced with 22 minutes left on the clock as the Eagles struggled to crack down the resolute League Two side.
Roy Hodgson’s side had Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend in the game but failed to bury the ball at the back of the net until the Black Stars striker was introduced.
He worked his way down the flank in the 85th minute and was hacked down by the visitors defence as they continued to frustrate the hosts. But, it was just time for them to go down as Schlupp weighed in the free kick and Ayew sneaked in and powered home a header with a towering effort with 4 minutes to wind down the clock.
Saturday night’s goal becomes Ayew’s second goal in two games for the Eagles and he is gradually proving his worth as he seeks to convince the Palace fans of his quality and readiness to repay the faith in him.
His scoring form would also come in good for Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah who has recently demanded more from his strikers, admitting he has challenges in the department.
