Former Black Queens captain Alberta Sackey is up for the Greatest ever Goal at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The ex-Ghana female international has her goal nominated for the top award ahead of this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Sackey scored a beauty in Ghana’s final Group game against Australia at the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the USA.
The former African Women’s Footballer of the Year award winner picked a ball from the edge of the box, beat her marker and looped over Australian goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri to register Ghana’s only goal in the competition.
The 46-year-old comes up against former Brazilian star Sisleide do Amor Lima (Sisi), five-time Women’s World player of the year Marta Vieira da Silva, Ingrid Johansson, formerly of the Swedish National team, USA captain Carli Lloyd, Maren Mjelde of Norway, Mexico star Monica Ocampo, ex-US National team skipper Abby Wambach, XL Song of China and Japanese forward Homare Sawa who all scored great individual goals in previous World Cups.
Alberta Sackey remains one of Ghana’s most celebrated female footballers having led the country to two FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments thus in 1999 and 2003.
