Ghana international Abdul Majeed Waris was rated best player of the game after setting up the opening goal for Nantes and helping them to a 2-1 win over giants Olympique Lyon on Friday night.
Reputable online stats provider, whoscored.com, rated the Black Stars forward 7.56/10, that’s third best on the pitch, while other websites rated him 7.8/10, making him the game’s top performer as he helped Nantes to move further away from the drop zone with the vital win.
The game had to travel only 11 minutes before Malian Kalifa Coulibaly scored the opener for the home side through a Waris assist from just around the area.
Though Lyon levelled before the break, the striker and his teammates combined to restore their lead after the break and eventually won the match which has now taken them to 15th place on 34 points, 9 better than 18th place Dijon.
His form comes as a piece of good news for Black Stars head coach James Kwesi Appiah who is counting the battle-readiness of his squad ahead of the 2019 AFCON tournament in Egypt.
The striking department has now got a number of names for Kwesi Appiah to make his choice with China-based Emmanuel Boateng, Trabzonspor’s Caleb Ansah Ekuban recently making waves with the team, captain Asamoah Gyan, Jordan Ayew and perhaps Richmond Boakye-Yiadom all seeking to make a breakthrough.
Waris, a member of Ghana’s squad at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, would be making his debut AFCON appearance if he makes the squad to Egypt.
Ghana have been drawn in Group F along with holders Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau.
