Ghana’s quest to defend the WAFU Women’s Cup of Nations have been dashed after losing 4-2 on penalties to Nigeria in the semi-finals.
The Black Queens could not make their effort pay off after dominating the game in regulation time.
Ghana enjoyed much of the possession throughout the game but succumbed to defeat on penalties following a scoreless draw.
Midfielder Grace Asantewaa and winger Grace Animah all missed their kicks.
Coach Mercy Tagoe and her girls will now settle for bronze by taking on Mali who also lost to host Cote d’ Ivoire in the other semi-final match.
Nigeria on the win progresses to the finals where they will take on host Cote d’ Ivoire.
Ghana are the defending Champions of the WAFU Women’s Cup of Nations after winning the last edition of the competition.
