Kotoko Coach CK Akonnor has conceded defeat after his side lost 3-1 to Ashanti Gold in the semi-final of the NC Special Cup Tier II.
Ashanti Gold showed class by dominating and defeating their rivals at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.
Kotoko could not hold onto an early lead as they sat back to allow Ashanti Gold outclass them in style.
Naby Keita’s 2nd minute goal was cancelled by Yusif Mubarik before Emmanuel Owusu and Mark Agyekum added two more goals for the Miners.
Akonnor admits his opponents were superior over his side.
“We lost because we couldn’t keep the ball. Our opponent were better than us in terms of possession. They controlled the game. We came in with the idea of stopping the midfield by making sure that players like McCarthy (Appiah) and others wouldn’t get much of the ball. We couldn’t handle the situation in midfield,” CK Akonnor told reporters.
“Fortunately for us we got an early goal which normally would encourage any other team to play but we lost it in the middle. Ashanti Gold controlled the game. They play very well. They were better than us. We didn’t do well. The ability to show hunger for success was not there today (yesterday) compare to what we did against Hearts of Oak,” he ended.
Kotoko’s only opportunity to make it to Africa next year is to win the Tier I by beating Karela United in the finals on Sunday to secure the only available slots for the CAF Champions League.
