Interim Kotoko Coach Johnson Smith wants to guide team to Africa

  • December 3, 2019

Interim Kotoko Coach Johnson Smith aims to guide the Club to Africa.

Kotoko have placed the former Karela United Coach in charge until further notice.

Smith returned to the Porcupine Warriors as an assistant Coach under Kjetil Zachariassen who has already been sacked.

The departure of Zachariassen saw the Club tasking Johnson Smith to handle matters on the interim.

Despite not being confirmed as the substantive head Coach for the Reds, the former Africa Sports player is keen to lead the side to Africa’s inter-club competition next year.

“I have a good squad and I am content with them. They are about 34 in number,” Smith told Graphic Sports.

“Although some of them may be transferred to other teams and some are opting not to renew their contract, we should be able to work with what we have.

“I’m not bent on recruiting new ones. I will train those I have and ensure they play to my philosophy.

“I have a couple of good players on the injury list right now, like Abdul Ganiyu, Maxwell Baakoh and Richard Senanu.

“Hopefully they will recover soon and join the team in good time to help us achieve our objective for the season.”

“My main aim is to by all means return the team to play in one of the African club competitions,” the coach added.

“Kotoko is a big club and as such they have to compete in big competitions.”

The Ghanaian giants could not progress to the Group stage of both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions after losing to Tunisian Club Etoile du Sahel and San Pedro of Ivory Coast respectively.

Kotoko could however make the head coaching role vacant should Johnson Smith fail to convince at the Club.
