Highly placed former government official and ranking member on Parliamentary Select Committee for Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon Kwablah Mensah Woyome has revealed that the Mills led government paid off a debt of $12 million for the construction of the Essipong stadium.
The Western region based Sports facility was constructed for the 2008 AFCON staged in Ghana under the John Agyekum Kufuor administration.
Earmarked for renovation at a cost of $3 Million, Hon Kwablah Mensah Woyome revealed the the Atta Mills led NDC government paid off a whopping $12 million debt for the construction of the Essipong stadium.
Speaking to Ebenezer Amuzu of Ashaiman TV, the ranking member elaborated the role played by his government in the construction of the facility.
“When we took over from the John Agyekum Kufour’s govt, we inherited a debt of 12 million dollars on the Essipong stadium which we paid in full”, Hon Woyome told Ebenezer Amuzu.
The football fraternity blamed handlers of the Essipong stadium for the negligence in maintaining the facility that was once dubbed as the face of sports in the Western belt of the country.
