Ghana legendary striker Asamoah Gyan has been permanently stripped off the Black Stars captaincy as new head coach Charles Akonnor confirmed Andre Ayew as captain of his side.
Akonnor kept faith in the Ayew who was handed the captain prior to Ghana’s captain in the 2019 AFCON after then-head coach James Kwasi Appiah decided to strip Gyan off the captaincy.
Gyan was named as permanent Ghana captain in 2013 as he replaced former defender John Mensah who was then elevated to the role of General captain.
“I have the pleasure of announcing that defender John Mensah has been elevated to the General Captain of the Black Stars,” Kwesi Appiah said in a statement published by the Ghana FA official website.
“Subsequently, I have appointed Asamoah Gyan as the permanent captain of the Black Stars. “John Mensah remains an integral member of the Black Stars. “I urge all players to give the necessary support to Asamoah Gyan to help Ghana achieve success in our future challenges.”
Kwasi Appiah’s decision to strip Gyan off the captain sparked angry reaction from the former Udinese and Stade Rennes man who reportedly decided to opt out of the Ghana campaign at the 2019 continental showpiece.
While Kwasi Appiah elevated Gyan to the position of general captain Akonnor has totally muted the idea of a general captain which means there is no leadership role for the former Al Ain man in his spell as head coach of the Black Stars.
