Charles Akonnor was at the helm when the Black Stars demolished Qatar 5-1 in an international friendly on Monday afternoon at the Mardan Sports Complex in Antalya, Turkey.
The 3-0 loss to Mali was Ghana’s worst in ten years and the 5-1 triumph over Qatar becomes the West African powerhouse’s best since September 2017.
The Black Stars suffered a devastating 3-0 hammering at the hands of Mali at the Emir Hotel Sports Complex with Hamari Traore, El Bilal and Amadou Haidara grabbing the goals for Mohamed Magassouba’s side.
Akonnor and his side suffered serious backlash back home in Ghana as fans took to social media to express their discontent with the underwhelming performance from the new boys while Arsenal fans went to Twitter bash newly minted Gunner Thomas Partey for his performance on the evening.
The results meant Ghana had recorded the worst defeat by goal-margin in the 10 years with the last of such massive defeat coming in a 4-1 loss to the Netherlands in June 2010 in a pre-FIFA World Cup friendly in Rotterdam.
But on Monday Tariqe Fosu, Andre Ayew, Caleb Ekuban and Samuel Owusu were all on target as the Black Stars recorded an emphatic win over the 2022 FIFA World Cup host.
The 5-1 results equals the 5-1 away win over Congo in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in September 2017.
Akonnor has now found the inspiration he has been looking for as the win has injected confidence and enthusiasm in his side.
