Japan have slapped a hefty suspension on world swimming champion Daiya Seto after the athlete admitted to engaging to extra marital affair.
The 26-year-old Saitama-born prodigy will not be able to compete in any event for the rest of the year due to the sanction imposed on him by the Japan Swimming Federation for breaching the governing body’s sportsmanlike conduct standard.
Seto, who is the reigning 200m and 400m individual medley world champion, stepped down as captain of Japan’s Olympic swim team after admitting to the affair.
Seto won Olympic 400m individual medley bronze in Rio four years ago.
“I think my apology is to continue swimming, restoring the trust of my family, who have been deeply hurt by my irresponsible behaviour,” Seto said. “I would like to seriously face swimming with the determination to start over so that my family and everyone will recognise me as a swimmer again.”
But, the champion will return to the sport when he represents Japan at the delayed 2021 Olympics which will be staged in Tokyo.
