Ghana coach Charles Akonnor has named Asante Kotoko defender Christopher Nettey in his starting XI to face Sudan in the 2021 AFCON qualifier on Thursday evening.
Nettey, 22, received a late invitation from the Ghana coach after some of his key players failed to make the trip to the West African nation.
Nettey gets the nod to start in defence ahead of Benson Anang who plays for MSK Zilina in Slovakia. Anang excelled on his debut against Qatar in last month’s FIFA international friendly game and was widely pipped to start on the right side of defence but the home-based player has gazumped him for the nod.
Chelsea reserves team defender Baba Rahman picks the other berth available on the left as Akonnor has opted to go with experience for the side. Rahman has barely seen game time this season after featuring in just 2 games for Chelsea U23 in the Premier League 2.
Metz captain John Boye partners Strasbourg center back Alexander Djiku in central defence as Afriyie Acquah provides a defensive midfield shield. The Turkey-based defender will be tasked with a job to destroy the opposition’s defence.
In central midfield alongside him will be former Dreams FC midfielder Emmanuel Lomotey who plies his trade with French Ligue 2 side Amiens.
Winger Samuel Owusu has been named on the wings along with Tariqe Fosu while Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew lead the lines for the Black Stars.
Richard Ofori – Christopher Nettey, Baba Rahman, John Boye, Alexander Djiku – Afriyie Acquah, Emmanuel Lomotey, Samuel Owusu, Tarique Fosu – Jordan Ayew, Andre Ayew.
