Supremely majestic: Swansea star Andre Ayew powers Ghana to victory over Sudan in Cape Coast

Swansea City star Andre Ayew came to Ghana’s rescue with two impressive goals for the West African nation as they cruised past Sudan 2-0 in the 2021 AFCON qualifying game on Thursday evening.

Ayew, 30, drew first blood for Charles Akonnor’s side when he curled home an artful free-kick from the 20 yards with 18 minute on the clock.

Hubert Velud’s Sudan side had come into the game strongly after the interval but the former Olympique Marseille and West Ham United forward sunk his dagger into their hearts in an entertaining game that did not have fans on attendance in Cape Coast.

Ghana went into the game without Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey who couldn’t travel to the West African nation due to a reported injury while Wakaso Mubarak wasn’t allowed to travel by his Chinese club.

Ajax star Kudus Mohammed equally missed the clash with injury leaving Akonnor with a depleted side that featured experienced duo of John Boye and Afriyie Acquah.

Sudan grabbed the lion’s share of possession after the break as they perpetually knocked at the door of Ghana for their equaliser and were unlucky on a few occasions when they really came close to levelling things up.

But, their ambitions were deflated Ayew picked a loose ball in the middle, skipped past a couple of defenders with the application of delirious dribbling technique, creating space for himself in the area before unleashing an unstoppable drive which sailed in to seal the win for the Black Stars who now lead Group C with 9 points and a 100 percent record.

Thursday’s double means Ayew has now scored 4 goals for the Black Stars in his last two games taking his season’s total to 9 goals – 5 for Swansea City in the Championship.
