Kajally Drammeh drew Gambia from a superb header before Lamarana Jallow put the young scorpions into the lead from a free kick.
Gambia however looked the better side throughout the first half.
Ghana came back stronger in the second half in search for the equalizer.
Zambia stood their grounds and maintained their momentum to snatch a vital win.
Ghana will now face Cameroon as one of the third best places sides in the quarter finals.
