English side Chelsea have been crowned champions of Europe after beating Manchester City 1-0 at the Estadio do Dragao in Portugal on Saturday night.
German forward Kai Havertz broke the resistance of Manchester City’s defence to score the solitary goal of the game 3 minutes before half-time.
Chelsea defended like demons to snuff out Manchester City but this was a perfectly calibrated triumph, built upon a structured attacking approach, choosing the right moments to transition, and illuminated by the smoothness of Havertz’s technique.
City created chances of their own after the break and should have scored the equaliser but Chelsea remained steady in defence as they prevented their rivals from scoring.
This becomes Chelsea’s European success after winning the title in the 2011/12 season.
