Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities FC could land themselves in relegation if they lose a protest filed against the Royals by Elmina Sharks.

Elmina Sharks, 16th, have launched a protest against Legon Cities, 14th, for fielding an unqualified player in their matchday 33 clash at the Ndoum Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Both teams are battling to avoid relegation from the Ghanaian top-flight league and the outcome of the protest could have a telling effect on the survival of Legon Cities.

Accra-based Asempa FM have reported that Sharks have filed a protest against Cities for fielding Issaka Mohammed who they claim was unqualified to play in their matchday 33 game which ended 2-0 in favour of Sharks.

According to broadcast journalist Andy Obeng Kwaku, Sharks are asking the Ghanaian football regulatory to deduct 3 points from the accumulated points of Cities who used Issaka despite him being suspended per the regulations of the Ghana Premier League.

Issaka Mohammed, a defender, joined Cities from Sharks during the second registration window of the Ghana Premier League. Per the disclosure made by the journalist on the show Cities failed to let the defender serve an automatic one-game suspension after receiving three yellow cards.

In the protest Sharks reports that the player was on two yellow cards after picking bookings in the first half of the league season. He received his third yellow card of the season in the 52nd minute of their 1-0 loss to WAFA in a matchday 25 clash at the WAFA Arena in Sogakope.

Since then, the 26-year-old has featured 90 minutes in all subsequent games for Cities, meaning he is yet to serve the suspension. Sharks are arguing that once the player failed to serve the ban in the matchday 26 clash against Aduana Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium, he is still ineligible to play in the league until he serves the ban.

In Sharks are successful in their protest Cities will lose 3 points from their accumulated 39 points which could leave them with a slim chance of beating the drop.
