Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cut sod for work to commence on the construction of Olympic standard facility at Borteyman for the 2023 African Games, dubbed Accra 2023.
The Ghanaian leader said the West African powerhouse will host the best ever event in the history of the competition.
Tuesday afternoon’s action from the President puts to bed any concerns over Ghana’s willingness to host the event as contractors have already moved to site to start work on the project.
Meanwhile the President announced the initial plan to construct a 50,000-capacity stadium at the site has been abandoned due to time constraint. He also confirmed part of the games will be held at the University of Ghana, Legon sporting facility which is set to undergo major upgrade.
Ghana won the bid to host the 13th edition of the African Games after beating off competition from Abuja and Ouagadougou.
