The logo for the 13th African Games, dubbed Accra 2023, was officially launched on Thursday in Ghana’s capital Accra.
The logo is one of the key brands and identities of the African Games and by extension, the corporate identity of the Local Organising Committee and the African Union. And, also becomes the main marketing tool for organising and hosting the African Games.
The logo was designed by Tracey Ampa-Oppong, then 21, a product of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
As the host country, Ghana was mandated to design the logo to portray the spirit of the games.
Executive Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, in his speech, said the advisory council received thousands of creative designs from young Ghanaians. But, narrowed the selection down to a shortlist of five outstanding works before whittling the number down to a further two.
According to Dr. Ofosu-Asare, the African Union Council was involved in the selection process of the final logo for the games. “The two shortlisted candidates were made to appear before the African Union council and they had to justify their works. They did it via virtual together with the LOC. I have to say that the AU council was overwhelmed and impressed with the works and eventually the logo and the mascot were accepted,” he said.
