JE Sarpong, the legendary Ghanaian trainer who discovered Asamoah Gyan during his schoolboy days, doesn’t believe Ghana can win the 2021 AFCON tournament.
The Black Stars are feverishly preparing in Qatar for the continental showpiece which kicks off in Cameroon next week.
Ghana has not won the AFCON trophy since 1982 in Libya and this year’s edition makes it 40 years since the Black Stars last won the title.
Ghana President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has tasked the team to end Ghana’s trophy drought by delivering the ultimate. But, 71-year-old Sarpong has insisted he doesn’t expect the Black Stars to win the ultimate.
“I doubt Ghana can win the title in Cameroon. If the team reaches the quarter-final stage of the tournament, that would come as a credit for the team,” he told Kwame Dwomoh-Agyemang on The File show on GTV Sports+.
The Black Stars start their campaign with an opening game against Morocco on January 10, 2022, at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé.
Ghana is in group C with Morocco, Comoros, and Gabon.
