Bottom-placed Elmina Sharks ended the unbeaten run of Asante Kotoko in the Ghana Premier League after handing down a painful 2-1 loss to the Porcupine Warriors at the Ndoum Sports Complex on Monday.
Dickson Afoakwa registered the opening goal for Prosper Narteh Ogum’s men 6 minutes from the end of the first stanza after he connected home a cross from Cameroonian Franck Mbella who mightily went past Prince Kpodo and set up Afoakwa who gleefully slotted into the empty net.
But, Ebenezer Adukwao Boadi scored the equaliser for the home after he outleaped the Kotoko defensive system to head home an Alhaji Mustapha cross from the right cancel out the opening goal scored by the ex-Belarus-based forward.
Ten minutes after the break, Sharks were awarded a penalty after Mohammed Sherif handled a corner kick inside the Kotoko box. Goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim dived to his right to save Alhaji Mustapha’s kick but the assistant referee flagged him for moving off the line before the ball was kicked. The Kotoko players, led by Danlad, staged a strong protest leading to a red card being flashed to Ibrahim Imoro for harassing the assistant referee.
Mustapha beat Danland in the retake as he sent the former Ghana U17 keeper to his wrong side.
Sharks went ahead to protect their lead as Kotoko succumbed to their first loss since losing to King Faisal in December 2021. Since the loss to King Faisal in the league, Kotoko had gone 8 games unbeaten – having won 6 and drawn 2.
